Approximately 2,200 German companies are registered with the Mexican Ministry of Economy, according to the Federal Foreign Office.
These companies have some percentage of German capital and approximately 33% of them have their own production plants in Mexico.
Among other products, these factories produce cars, medicines, chemicals, auto parts and machinery.
German Economy
Germany is the largest economy in Europe and the fourth largest in the world.
These are some characteristics of Germany‘s economy for 2023:
- Nominal GDP: $4.5 trillion.
- Product exports: $1.9 trillion (third in the world).
- Imports of products: 1.47 trillion dollars (third position globally).
- It is a highly industrialized country.
- Inflation was 6.5 percent at the end of the year.
- Unemployment rate: 5 percent.
German companies
German companies are characterized by their focus on innovation, engineering and technology.
Many are medium-sized and family-owned, known as Mittelstand, and participate in dual training (education in schools and in the workplace).
In particular, German companies create some 300,000 direct jobs in Mexico and, as employers, often serve as role models.
To name a few cases of their productive participation in Mexico:
- Volkswagen, BMW and Daimler (Mercedes-Benz) produce vehicles and auto parts.
- Siemens manufactures generators, transformers, control systems, sensors and trains.
- Henkel produces adhesives, sealants, detergents and household cleaning products.
- Bosch manufactures auto parts, household appliances, power tools, and heating and cooling systems.
- Bayer manufactures pharmaceuticals, pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, analgesics and anti-inflammatories,
- BASF produces intermediates and chemicals for the manufacture of plastics, resins, pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, cosmetics, detergents and building materials such as adhesives and sealants, as well as coatings, plastics and additives for the automotive industry.
- Merck makes medicines, vaccines and personal care products.
- ThyssenKrupp AG produces flat steel and metal products, elevators, escalators and automotive structural parts.
Education
There are five German international schools in Mexico with some 5,000 students.
Other schools throughout the country are partners in the Goethe-Institut’s Schools: Partners for the Future initiative.
According to the Federal Foreign Office, there is a high demand for German as a foreign language: currently, some 86,000 people are learning German in Mexico.
