Mexico led world blackberry production in 2023, according to data from the Ministry of Agriculture.
Of total global production, Mexico accounted for 21.8 percent.
Around 60 countries grow this fruit in the world.
Below Mexico, Vietnam ranked second and New Guinea third.
Together, these two nations equal Mexico’s harvest.
Blackberry cultivation in Mexico

In 2023, Mexican blackberry production reached 238,000 tons. This represents an increase of 4.8% compared to the average of the last 10 years. It also represents 7.0% more than the previous year.
World blackberry production
Blackberries are one of the four commercial berries, along with strawberries, blueberries and raspberries.
These fruits stand out for their high nutritional and commercial value.
The different blackberry varieties offer a wide range of flavors, ranging from sweet to slightly acidic.
Between 2018 and 2023, Mexican blackberry exports showed a remarkable increase. In detail, the quantity exported grew from 77,389 tons to 88,075 tons. This represents an increase of 13.8%. In addition, the value of exports increased by 85.9%. Thus, the value rose from $405 million in 2018 to $754 million in 2023. During this period, both volume and value showed an upward trend. This growth confirms the exporting nature of the country.
Origin and Trade Destination
During the same period, the United States remained the main destination for Mexican blackberries. Shipments to the United States increased by 16.7%, reaching 11,764 tons. On the other hand, Canada consolidated its position as the second most important destination. Shipments to Canada grew by 52.4%, equivalent to 925 tons.
