Malibu Boats stands out for its leadership in high-performance sportboats in the United States.

According to the National Marine Manufacturers Association, Malibu Boats had the largest share in the U.S. high-performance sportboat market, considering data from the end of June 2024.

This company has the Malibu and Axis brands in this category.

Boatbuilding in the United States

Domestically, the U.S. boatbuilding industry (excluding shipyard production) reported the following revenues, in millions of dollars, with 2021 as the latest available data:

  • 2018: 11,289.
  • 2019: 10,636.
  • 2020: 10,521.
  • 2021: 13,248.

These vessels are generally intended for personal use. 

This classification includes establishments that manufacture heavy-duty inflatable plastic or rubber boats.

Other examples are kayaks, motorboats, sailboats, rowboats, canoes and yachts.

Malibu Boats

This company also ranks first in market share in the 24′ to 29′ segment of the outboard motorboat category in the United States.

Malibu Boats participates with its Cobalt brand in this segment.

Finally, the company is among the market share leaders in the outboard fiberglass fishing market.

The company serves this segment with its Pursuit and Maverick Boat Group brands.

In each of these cases, rankings are based on unit volume.

Malibu Boats reported that retail sales of new recreational powerboats in the United States totaled $15.8 billion in 2023.

Outboard motorboats

The most recent industry statistics released on September 30, 2023 by Statistical Surveys, Inc. show that Robalo Company is the third largest manufacturer of outboard-powered boats in the United States. 

This leadership corresponds to the 18- to 36-foot range, with a 4.5 percent market share. 

In addition, Marine Products, which includes the Robalo and Chaparral brands, also ranks third in this segment. 

Together, they achieve a 6.2 percent market share in outboard engines of this size.

Robalo and Chaparral are subsidiaries of Marine Products Corporation.
