América Móvil leads the ranking of the main competitors in fixed telephony service in Mexico, although with a continuously decreasing market share.

This share fell from 70.11% in 2013 to 35.76% in 2023, according to data from the Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFT).

IFT’s estimate of these statistics is based on the number of fixed telephony service lines.

By contrast, Grupo Televisa‘s share of this indicator increased from 8.61% to 26.40% during the same period.

How big is the market? The number of fixed telephony service lines in Mexico reached 28.8 million in December 2023, a year-on-year growth of 8.6 percent.

Then, in third position, was Megacable-MCM. Its market share rose from 3.94 to 17.95 percent from 2013 to 2023.

Finally, Grupo Salinas’ share increased from 0.99% to 17.76% in that decade.

Among the rest of the participants, Axtel and Telefónica stand out.

The IFT prepares the statistics with data provided by telecommunications operators as of December of each year.

Competition in telecommunications

In the residential fixed telephony segment, at the end of 2023, there were an estimated 53 lines per 100 households nationwide. Mexico City led with 86 lines per 100 households, followed by Nuevo León with 77 and Baja California with 74. On the other hand, the states with the fewest lines were Tabasco (26), Michoacán (25), Oaxaca (22) and Chiapas (19).

In terms of consumption, the monthly average in the fourth quarter of 2023 was 32 minutes of usage per line (MOU). In addition, the fixed telephony market showed significant changes. The preponderant economic agent lost close to 35 percentage points between 2013 and 2023. In the latter year, its share fell below 40%. This reflects an increase in competition within the sector over time.
