Mexican Economy
According to preliminary figures, Mexico’s real GDP grew 1.6 percent in the third quarter of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023. This increase reflected greater dynamism in agricultural and industrial activity. In addition, growth was mainly attributed to the improved performance of manufacturing and public services.
On the other hand, the services sector showed a mixed performance among the subsectors. However, its overall expansion was driven by growth in professional services.
According to Inegi data, Mexico’s service sector GDP was 19.9 billion current pesos in the third quarter of 2024, a year-on-year increase of 7.9%.
Within this sector, telecommunications services contributed 310,611 million pesos, 2.1% more than in the same quarter of 2023.
On the other hand, GDP related to electronic information processing, lodging and other related services was 11,736 million pesos, an interannual increase of 2.1 percent.
Telecommunications Sector
In Mexico, the government allows up to 100% Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the telecommunications and satellite communication sector, including cable television. In addition, it allows up to 49% FDI in broadcasting. However, this is subject to reciprocity agreements between Mexico and the country of origin of the investor or operator.
The Federal Telecommunications and Broadcasting Law seeks to expand access to these services. It also aims to eliminate or reduce certain charges of cellular telephone operators, such as long distance charges. On the other hand, the Public Broadcasting System of the Mexican State, a decentralized public entity, guarantees continuous access to broadcasting services in all states of the country.
