The state has an Economically Active Population (EAP) of 1.8 million and the average age of the population is 30 years old.

While its average schooling is 10.4 years, the unemployment rate is 2.7 percent.

According to Inegi projections, Baja California’s total population will increase from 3.8 million people in 2024 to 4.4 million people in 2030.

There are 126,246 micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) operating in the state, divided as follows:

  • Micro: 111,601.
  • Small: 12,209.
  • Medium: 2,436.

Inegi’s National Statistical Directory of Economic Units ranks in the top positions the following vocations aligned with the industrial policy:

  • Manufacture of blacksmith products.
  • Repair and maintenance of machinery and equipment.
  • Fishing.

Baja California’s international purchases were 39,638 million dollars and 44,160 million dollars in international sales, with data as of September 2024.

Baja California is positioned as the main land entry route for foreign tourists, according to INEGI. In 2022, the state received 12.84 million visitors, which represents almost 40% of the total number of visitors registered at border crossings between the United States and Mexico.

In 2023, although the data only covers up to half of the year, the same proportion is maintained, with a slight increase in the total number of visitors. This reflects a process of tourism recovery to pre-pandemic levels.

During 2018 and 2019, Baja California received an average of 23 million visitors annually, highlighting its importance as a tourist destination and strategic entry point in the region.
