Private investment in Mexico’s airports

Private investment in Mexico‘s airports totaled 8,914.2 million pesos between October 2021 and June 2022, according to the Federal Civil Aviation Agency (AFAC).

Of this amount, 2,212.5 million pesos correspond to Grupo Aeroportuario del Sureste (Asur); 4,184.7 million pesos to Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico (GAP), and 2,517 million pesos to Grupo Aeroportuario del Centro Norte.

The three companies made these investments to ensure that the concessioned airports are maintained in optimal conditions, in accordance with their Master Development Programs.

From September 2021 to June 2022, the following works were carried out:

  • Expansion of the last waiting room and baggage claim area of the Terminal 4 building at Cancun International Airport.
  • Reconfiguration of the expansion of the first stage terminal building at Merida International Airport.
  • Relocation of the Rescue and Fire Extinguishing Service station at Guadalajara International Airport.
  • Replacement of screening machines in the automatic baggage handling system (BHS) at the Tijuana International Airport.
  • Rehabilitation of taxiways at Monterrey International Airport.
  • Reconfiguration of the terminal building at Mazatlán International Airport.

Private investment

In order to boost connectivity, between September 2021 and June 2022, 176 new international routes were authorized, of which 123 correspond to passenger air transportation and 53 to cargo air transportation.

With regard to domestic routes, 69 passenger routes were authorized between September 2021 and June 2022.

At Felipe Angeles International Airport (AIFA), two international routes (AIFA-Caracas, Venezuela and Caracas, Venezuela-AIFA) and 26 domestic routes were authorized.

International agreements

During the last quarter of 2021 and the first half of 2022, progress was made in the program to negotiate new bilateral air agreements to increase the participation of domestic and international aviation in world markets:

  • On November 29, 2021, the Air Services Agreement between the Government of Mexico and the Government of Iceland was signed.
  • On December 14, 2021, the Air Services Agreement between the Government of Mexico and the Government of the Republic of the Philippines was signed.
  • The Agreement with Nicaragua was concluded and is in the process of being signed.
  • In order to expand and promote the signing of Air Transport Agreements and derived from the new normality of COVID 19, electronic contacts were made with civil aviation authorities of three countries: Ukraine, Dominican Republic and Hungary.
  • In May 2022, a promotional visit was made to Saudi Arabia and Qatar with the aim of attracting commercial flights of airlines from those countries to AIFA.

With the purpose of strengthening communication within the national territory, and in order to increase connectivity in the northern region of the country, on May 16, 2022, the Concession Title was granted to provide the Public Service of Regular National Air Transportation of Passengers, Cargo and Mail.
