The company also has a Distribution Center located in Tijuana, with the capacity to supply the growth of the chain to more stores in the future.

Founded in 1939 as a grocery store, Calimax is the main reference in the retail sector in the region.

After adapting to the supermarket format in 1968, it expanded into Baja California and neighboring Sonora.

According to the US Department of Agriculture, the company also developed a diversified store configuration: supermarket (Calimax and Calimax Plus), discount store (Aprecio), wholesaler (Bodegón) and convenience store (Cali Super Xpress).

Exports

Nearly three-quarters of its 100 stores are located in the Tijuana metropolitan area. The company also has a joint venture to manage Smart & Final’s Mexican stores, and with a huge state-of-the-art distribution center in Tijuana, Calimax manages its own distribution/logistics network.

Between 20-30% of its products are imported from the United States, including some for its locally recognized private labels.

Calimax is located in northwestern Mexico and has joined forces with another regional retailer, S-Smart, to strengthen its purchasing power.

Calimax has made an investment in rebranding and has begun building its supermarkets under its new, smaller but more functional store concept.

In these new stores, agricultural products play a central role to better serve customers’ needs.

This is the only chain in the region with an aggressive expansion plan against its main competitors Soriana and Comercial Mexicana.

Calimax operates more than 20,000 items for sale and a fleet of more than 200 trucks.  It has a joint venture with Smart & Final Inc. which has 15 branches in Baja California and San Luis Río Colorado, Sonora.
