Claudia Sheinbaum and Joe Biden will govern their respective countries, at the same time, for 3 months and 20 days.

Sheinbaum will begin her term as President of Mexico on October 1 and Biden will step down as President of the United States on January 20, 2025.

Biden congratulated Sheinbaum on her election on July 3, after winning 59% of the vote in the June 2 presidential election.

Mexico’s first female president

An analysis of the U.S. Congress referred that U.S. officials, some representatives and certain senators have expressed concern about many of the constitutional reforms, particularly those recently enacted, which include the direct election of judges.

At the same time, according to the same analysis, “some members of the U.S. Congress have expressed optimism about the possibility of working with the Sheinbaum administration due to the positive meetings held to date.”

Sheinbaum has stated that she will give continuity to several of the main actions and works carried out by outgoing Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.

But she could also have her own stamp with:

  • Policies related to renewable energies.
  • Guidelines with greater consideration of stakeholders compared to López Obrador.
  • Actions related to gender, supporting certain needs of women.
  • Considerations that take more into account research, development and science.
  • Actions to strengthen the digital economy.
  • Policies and measures to take advantage of relocation (nearshoring).

Majority in Congress

In her government program -called “100 steps for transformation”-, Sheinbaum proposes an annual per capita GDP growth rate of 2.4 percent.

This is one of her statements in that document, related to IMMEX companies:

“We are going to create public early education centers for early childhood, and we are going to give priority to the daughters and sons of agricultural day laborers and maquila workers in the north of the country.”

Another of his statements linked to the USMCA was given in Acapulco in October 2023:

“The trade agreement (USMCA) represents an enormous potential for the Mexican economy, not only what it represents today, but also . . . in the future with nearshoring.”

MORENA (Sheinbaum’s political party) and its allies succeeded in obtaining the two-thirds majority required to reform the Constitution in the Chamber of Deputies. In addition, they fell only three seats short of reaching the qualified majority (at least two-thirds of the votes) in the Senate.
