General Motors’ share in the U.S. automobile market was 16.5% in 2024.
This represents an increasing trend, considering that this share was 16% in 2022 and 16.2% in 2023.
General Motors is a U.S. automotive company that designs, manufactures and sells automobiles and automotive parts and provides automotive financing services.
General Motors’ share in the U.S.
In the United States, in 2024, GM had a 6.0% share of sales of the 2 million 939,000 cars; 12.6% in the 9 million 101,000 crossovers, and 31.8% in the 4 million 345,000 pickup trucks, according to the company’s own data.
At the same time, in China, its share was 6.9% of the 26 million 567,000 vehicles sold.
Strong price competition and overcapacity, driven by new entrants and rivals with lower prices, reduce profitability in China. In addition, regulations on emissions, fuel consumption and electric vehicles create more challenges for General Motors.
Business operations
General Motors expands its electric vehicle offerings with a flexible platform that adapts to different models and price points. Its next-generation battery technology allows it to diversify suppliers and optimize performance.
To drive this transition, GM has invested in its North American plants. Factory ZERO in Detroit produces models such as the GMC HUMMER EV and the Chevrolet Silverado EV. In Canada, CAMI is its first large-scale electric vehicle plant. In addition, Orion Assembly will become a production center for electric pickup trucks in 2026.
GM also mass produces battery cells through Ultium Cells, its joint venture with LG Energy Solution, with plants in Ohio and Tennessee, and new projects in Indiana together with Samsung SDI.
As of December 31, 2024, General Motors operated more than 100 facilities in the United States, focused on manufacturing, assembly, distribution and testing. Most are owned, while leased facilities include warehouses and offices.
Globally, GM has a presence in 33 countries, with production and distribution operations. Its main plants outside the United States are in Brazil, Canada, China, Mexico and South Korea.
