Mabe: novos investimentos e substituição de importações

Mexican home appliance producer Mabe announced Thursday that it will invest 668 million dollars in Mexico from 2025 to 2027.

Pablo Moreno, Mabe’s General Director of Corporate Affairs, made this announcement at a conference at the National Palace, which was attended by President Claudia Sheinbaum and the Secretary of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard.

Moreno said that the new investments will strengthen the company‘s innovation, design and development capabilities, the same as the production of household appliances.

In the current administration of Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbau, the Ministry of Economy has promoted the substitution of certain imports of the main companies established in the country and with external purchases from Asia. These companies include Foxconn, Intel, General Motors, DHL and Stellantis.

In particular, with respect to Mabe, the Ministry of Economy stated that it is seeking to shift more than 50% of its imports to the local market.

The alliance between General Electric (GE) and Mabe, established in 1987, concluded in June 2016 when GE sold its home appliances division, GE Appliances, to the Chinese company Haier. This transaction included the 48.4% stake GE held in Mabe.

After the sale, Haier assumed the rights and obligations that GE had in Mabe, marking the end of the direct collaboration between GE and the Mexican company.

“This investment (…) will undoubtedly boost the economy, generating opportunities and consolidating domestic supply, which is another of the important areas we are supporting,” said Moreno at the conference.

Mabe operates 15 plants in Mexico, where it produces refrigerators, stoves and dishwashers, among other household appliances

Moreno stressed that one of Mabe’s goals is to maintain Mexico as a global benchmark in white goods manufacturing.
