Made in Mexico e Hecho en México: regras de uso

The Ministry of Economy released on Monday the rules for the use of the Made in Mexico and Hecho en México certification marks.

These rules are established in an agreement signed by the Secretary of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard, which was published in the Official Journal of the Federation (DOF).

Mexico exported products worth 617,099.6 million dollars in 2024, which implies an increase of 4.1% over 2023.

Made in Mexico

Among the objectives of both seals are the following:

  • Promotion of domestic production.
  • Promotion of exports.
  • Identify the quality and authenticity of Mexican products.
  • Differentiation in the market.

US President Donald Trump ordered the application of an additional 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico, although he paused this measure for a month until July 4 in order to make progress in the negotiations that gave rise to it: concerns related to migration and drug trafficking. However, Canadian energy resources would have a lower tariff of 10 percent.

In addition, the United States has already imposed an additional 10% tariff on imports from China

Based on this threat, Ebrard referred that the President of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, determined to promote the Made in Mexico and Hecho en México seals to highlight the quality of Mexican products, as part of a series of several measures aimed at showing the benefits of productive integration in North America.

Requirements and authorizations

The purpose of the new rules of use is to establish the requirements and the process for the Ministry of Economy to grant authorization for the use of the Made in Mexico and Hecho en México certification marks, hereinafter certification marks.

The authorization for the use of the certification marks will be granted after verifying compliance with the requirements. In addition, the holder will confirm that the products manufactured, fabricated or assembled in Mexico meet high quality standards. Thus, they will reflect the identity and reputation of their origin. As a result, consumers will be able to easily identify them against similar products.

On the other hand, the authorization and any act related to their administration will not be subject to licensing. Likewise, the distinctive signs and names of these trademarks appear in the Graphic Identity Manual.
