U.S. President Donald Trump announced Thursday that he will impose an additional 10% tariff on all imports into the United States from China.

In February 2025, Trump announced the imposition of a 10% tariff on all U.S. imports of Chinese products. This measure has already gone into effect. In addition, he decided to withdraw de minimis treatment for Chinese imports, noting that China had not taken sufficient steps to address its role in the trade of fentanyl and synthetic opioids.

Tariff on China

In 2024, China ranked as the second largest exporter of goods to the United States. Its sales to that destination were $464.639 billion. This implied a year-on-year increase of 3%, according to data from the Department of Commerce.

Below are U.S. imports of goods from China, in billions of dollars:

  • 2018: 563.
  • 2019: 471.
  • 2020: 456.
  • 2021: 540.
  • 2022: 576.
  • 2023: 448.
  • 2024: 463.

Clarification: the U.S. administration decided to postpone the implementation of the de minimis measure until the creation of an adequate system for tariff collection.

In response to these actions, China retaliated with retaliatory tariffs. It imposed tariffs of 10-15% on US products such as agricultural machinery, automobiles, coal and liquefied natural gas. In addition, it initiated an investigation into the U.S. company Google and implemented export controls on certain chemicals.

U.S. exports

In 2024, China became the third largest destination for U.S. goods exports. It purchased $143.546 billion worth of U.S. products in that year. This is a 3% year-over-year drop.

Here are U.S. exports of goods to the Chinese market, in billions of dollars:

  • 2018: 120.
  • 2019: 106.
  • 2020: 124.
  • 2021: 151.
  • 2022: 154.
  • 2023: 148.
  • 2024: 144.

Gibberish

U.S. President Donald Trump changed his stance. Although on Wednesday he made a different statement, this Thursday he confirmed something new. He assured that the 25% general tariff on imports from Mexico and Canada will go into effect on March 4, as planned.

Background: this Wednesday, Trump decided to postpone the entry into force of the 25% general tariff on imports from Mexico and Canada. Instead of March 4, it will now be April 2.

When asked by the press about the new date, Trump responded in a straightforward manner: “April 2”. His statements occurred during his first cabinet meeting at the White House.
