The expansion of a Ternium Mexico plant in Pesqueria, Nuevo Leon, has allowed the company to increase its supply to the automotive industry.

In 2025, the company will continue to strengthen its competitive position in Mexico thanks to its expansion program.

The new pickling line at the Pesquería industrial center has improved capacity to serve automotive manufacturers and other industrial customers. In addition, the new finishing center has expanded the company’s offering of higher value-added products. The new galvanizing line and cold rolling mill are scheduled to begin operations before the end of the year.

A pickling line in a steel plant is an industrial process that uses acid baths, such as hydrochloric or sulfuric acid, to remove impurities, oxides and scale from hot-rolled steel. This treatment improves surface quality, prepares the material for processes such as cold rolling or galvanizing, and ensures better adhesion of coatings.

In 2024, Mexico produced 3 million 990,000 light vehicles, which implies an increase of 5.6% over 2023, according to Inegi data.

In addition, Mexico manufactured 213,200 heavy vehicles, with a year-on-year drop of 4.3%, in the same comparison.

The main producers of light vehicles in Mexico include General Motors, Nissan and Stellantis, while Freightliner, International and Kenworth stand out in the production of heavy vehicles.

Steel production

Ternium will continue to make progress in the construction of the new steel slab rolling mill in Pesquería and in the port infrastructure in Brownsville, Texas, designed to handle raw materials.

These facilities will allow greater integration with downstream operations and strengthen its position as a leading steel supplier in the region.

A steel slab mill is an industrial equipment that transforms rectangular blocks of steel into thinner sheets or coils. It is used in the production of steel for the automotive, construction and household appliance industries. It also optimizes the quality of the material by adjusting its thickness, strength and surface finish.

On the other hand, the new electric arc furnace (EAF) steel shop, which will come into operation in 2026, will boost the decarbonization goal and increase the production of finished products with molten and cast steel in the USMCA region.

The new DRI module will feature carbon capture technology and will be ready for the transition from natural gas to hydrogen.
