The largest exporters of steel and its manufactures to the United States in 2024 were Canada, China, Mexico, South Korea, and Brazil.

Imports of these products to the United States from around the world were $81 billion in 2024, down 1.3% from 2023.

This Sunday, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that his country will apply a 25% tariff on all steel and aluminum imports from around the world.

Below are the top exporters of steel (including steel manufactures) to the U.S. market in 2024, in millions of dollars and year-over-year growth rates, according to Department of Commerce statistics:

  • Canada: 12,980 (-8.2 percent).
  • China: 12,480 (+10.5 percent).
  • Mexico: 10,450 (-7.8 percent).
  • South Korea: 5,050 (-0.6 percent).
  • Brazil: 4,980 (+7.3 percent).

“Tariffs are going to help. Tariffs are going to make it very successful,” Trump told reporters Sunday.

Trump plans to impose the tariffs this Monday and schedules to make an announcement on reciprocal tariffs on Tuesday or Wednesday.

According to a US congressional analysis, in the steel and aluminum industries, US imports exceed exports; however, this can be misleading, as the North American market is highly integrated, particularly between Canada and the United States. In both industries, Canada is the largest source of annual US imports. Mexico has recently become the third largest source of steel imports, with China in second place.

Mexico is not a major producer of aluminum; however, Mexico consumes large volumes of North American aluminum, predominantly supplied by the United States. In terms of US exports, Canada and Mexico are the two largest receiving markets for steel and aluminum products.
