The Mexican government specified the U.S. content in the production of automobiles in Mexico with respect to General Motors (GM), Ford Motor and Stellantis.
By way of background, U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has stated that he plans to impose tariffs on imports of products to the United States, including Mexico as the origin.
U.S. content
Marcelo Ebrard, Secretary of Economy, spoke on this topic at the Economic Perspectives 2025 seminar, organized by ITAM, in Mexico City this Friday.
Ebrard pointed out that 35% of the content of vehicles assembled in Mexico is of U.S. origin. At the same time, 40.7% of domestic content in automotive exports.
“GM, Stellantis and Ford are those that have the greatest relative weight for Mexico’s exports, but also those that are subject to the greatest competition in the world today,” said Ebrard.
He added: “In other words, it has been a great business that explains why these companies have been able to survive. And we are now going to enter a scenario of greater competition for these companies, where any alteration you make in their relative costs will be a strategic disadvantage for the United States.
Automotive Production
In 2024, Mexico produced 3 million 989,000 light vehicles, a year-on-year increase of 5.6 percent.
Below is the production in Mexico of the three companies referred to, in thousands of units, according to Inegi data:
- General Motors: 889 (+23.0%, y-o-y rate).
- Ford Motor: 387 (+5.9%).
- Stellantis: 419 (-10.3 percent).
Donald Trump
In the United States, presidential elections were held on November 5, 2024. In them, Trump, candidate of the Republican Party, was elected as President.
On November 25, 2024, Trump made an important announcement. He reported that he plans to impose a 25% tariff on all products entering from Canada and Mexico. In addition, he proposed an additional 10% tariff on products coming from China. These measures would take effect on January 20, 2025. According to Trump, this decision responds to concerns about illegal immigration and drug trafficking. He also stated that these issues affect border security and require immediate action.
However, the impact of these tariffs remains uncertain. For her part, Sheinbaum has expressed her willingness to dialogue and cooperate. She has also expressed her openness to work on these issues and seek agreements to resolve the tariff situation.
