U.S. industry

To note: An industry’s value added is calculated as the difference between its gross output and its intermediate inputs. First, what is gross output? It includes sales or revenues, other operating income, commodity taxes, and inventory changes.

Now, what are intermediate inputs? These comprise energy, raw materials, semi-finished goods and services purchased from both domestic and foreign industries.

In simple terms, value added is obtained by subtracting intermediate inputs from gross output.

Value-added in U.S.

The three main components of value added are described below:

  • Return to domestic labor: This refers to compensation of employees.
  • Net return to government: This includes taxes on production and imports, net of subsidies.
  • Finally, return to domestic capital: This is known as the gross operating surplus.
