The U.S. Department of Commerce initiated a dumping and prohibited subsidy investigation against imports of wire mesh originating in Mexico.

From around the world, U.S. imports of these products had a customs value of US$55.2 million from January to November 2024.

From Mexico, these foreign purchases were 21.8%, according to Commerce Department data.

Wire mesh imports

The case originated in response to petitions from Keysteel Corp, Mid-South Wire Company, National Wire LLC, Oklahoma Steel & Wire Co. and Wire Mesh Corp.

As a result, the Department of Commerce commenced a nationwide circumvention investigation to determine whether standard welded steel wire mesh (wire mesh) from Mexico, which is completed in the United States from low-carbon steel wire produced in Mexico, is circumventing antidumping (AD) and countervailing duty orders on wire mesh from Mexico (CVD).

Below is the trend of wire mesh imports to the United States from Mexico, in millions of dollars:

  • 2018: 38.
  • 2019: 47.
  • 2020: 45.
  • 2021: 43.
  • 2022: 40.
  • 2023: 21.
  • 2024 (January-November): 21.8.

On November 5, 2024, pursuant to section 781(a) of the Tariff Act of 1930, as amended (the Act), and 19 CFR 351.226(h), petitioners filed requests for circumvention investigations alleging that wire mesh manufactured in the United States with low carbon steel wire manufactured in Mexico is circumventing AD and CVD orders.

The following were the top exporters of wire mesh to the U.S. market from January through November 2024, in millions of dollars:

  • Mexico: 21.8.
  • China: 10.0
  • Canada: 7.5.
  • Sweden: 3.4.
  • South Korea: 3.0.

Some of the companies exporting these products are Aceromex and Deacero.
